Non-Immigrant Visa Category "ED" (Education)
The Thai Non-Immigrant ED visa is what you now use to study Thai at a language school, because the DTV soft-power category has never covered general language instruction. The visa itself is small: a single-entry sticker valid 90 days from issue, giving a 90-day permit to stay on arrival, costing 70 Euro at the Royal Thai Embassy in Vienna (fees are set per mission — the Kuala Lumpur checklist charges RM 320). The year people talk about is built inside Thailand from extensions at 1,900 baht each, and language students are commonly granted 60 days at a time rather than twelve months.

What most guides get wrong about the ED visa / Thai language school visa
Each of these is a rule that changed, or a detail that is widely repeated incorrectly. Checked 11 September 2026.
Thai language schools were removed from the DTV soft-power list in 2025, so there was a cut-off date.
There is no published removal date, because general language study was never on the published list. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs DTV checklist describes the category as "Thai soft power related activities e.g. Muaythai, Thai culinary training and medical treatment" and has never named language courses. What changed across 2025 and into 2026 was adjudication: consulates that once accepted a Thai course letter stopped accepting it. Either way the practical answer today is the same — study Thai on a Non-Immigrant ED visa, not a DTV.
The ED visa is a one-year visa for language students.
The sticker in your passport is single entry, valid 90 days from issue, and buys a 90-day permit to stay on arrival. Everything after that is an extension of stay bought inside Thailand at 1,900 baht a time from the Immigration Bureau. Language students are typically granted 60 days per extension, dropping to 30 days or as little as 7 days to leave if the officer is not satisfied you have been studying — so a "one-year ED visa" is really four to six separate immigration appointments and roughly 7,600 to 11,400 baht in extension fees.
Once I have the ED visa I can pop over to Vietnam or Laos for a weekend like any other long-stay foreigner.
The ED visa is single entry. The Royal Thai Embassy in Vienna states that if you leave without a re-entry permit "the current stay permit shall be considered void" — your extension is dead and you start over. A re-entry permit costs 1,000 baht single or 3,800 baht multiple at the Immigration Bureau and must be bought before you fly; it lasts only as long as the extension stamp it attaches to, so you also have to be back in the country before your next extension date.
The school's enrolment letter is the only document that matters.
Mission checklists ask for paperwork most school-written guides skip. The Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur requires a "Certified criminal record in the applicant’s country of origin" plus the provider's registration and a Ministry of Education service area office approval letter; the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Chennai requires a "Payment slip for at least first semester’s tuition" and school licence documents in Thai. Fees differ too — 70 Euro in Vienna, RM 320 in Kuala Lumpur, Rs 4000 in Chennai. Read the checklist of the exact mission you are applying to.
You can keep renewing an ED visa at the same language school indefinitely.
Officers stop extending a student who stays at the same level; after about a year on one language course you are expected to move to a different language or programme. The extension appointment is itself a test — the officer asks simple questions in Thai and grants 60, 30 or 7 days on the strength of your answer. Reports of a large 2026 sweep against ghost enrolment circulate widely, one industry site putting it at "roughly 10,000 student visas" revoked, but that number traces to no named Immigration Bureau announcement: treat the figure as unverified while taking the enforcement direction seriously.
Where it wins
- It is the only route that fits Thai language study — the DTV soft-power category does not cover general language instruction, so the ED visa is not a fallback here, it is the intended channel.
- Entry cost is low next to the alternative: 70 Euro in Vienna against a DTV that requires a three-month bank statement ending at no less than 500,000 THB.
- No minimum age, no income test, and no insurance requirement on the MFA mission checklists — the qualifying test is a genuine Ministry of Education-registered course, not your net worth.
- Extensions are handled in-country, so once enrolled you deal with an Immigration Bureau office rather than flying out to a consulate.
Where it doesn’t
- Single entry. Any trip out of Thailand without a re-entry permit voids your permission to stay outright.
- The 90-day sticker means repeated immigration appointments — typically 60-day extensions at 1,900 baht each, with fresh school paperwork every time.
- The extension is discretionary and tested: officers ask questions in Thai, and a weak showing can mean 30 days, or 7 days to leave, instead of 60.
- You cannot work on it. Employment needs a separate work permit and a different visa category.
- Enforcement against schools that sell enrolment without teaching has tightened; if your school loses its licence, your visa support goes with it.
- Requirements vary by mission — criminal record certificates, tuition payment slips and Thai-language school licence copies appear on some checklists and not others.
Who cannot use this visa
- Enrolling at a school not registered with the Ministry of Education or lacking the service area office approval letter, which the mission checklist asks for directly.
- Applying in order to work remotely or simply to live in Thailand without attending classes; ghost enrolment is the specific target of current enforcement.
- Trying to cover Thai language study under the DTV soft-power category, which the MFA checklist limits to activities such as Muaythai, Thai culinary training and medical treatment.
- Failing to produce a certified criminal record where the mission requires one, as Kuala Lumpur does.
- Repeatedly seeking extensions for the same language course at the same level past roughly a year.
