What most guides get wrong about the Bali digital nomad visa
Each of these is a rule that changed, or a detail that is widely repeated incorrectly. Checked 3 October 2026.
You can pick up freelance work from Indonesian clients while on the E33G.
The permit explicitly prohibits selling goods or services in Indonesia and receiving any payment from Indonesian entities. It authorises remote work performed for an overseas company only, and a single Indonesian invoice puts the permit at risk.
The E33G can be converted from a tourist visa once you are in Bali.
Application must be made from your home country or another country outside Indonesia, before entry. Arriving first and converting is not available on this route.
Where it wins
- No sponsor is needed to apply, per the official page.
- A one-year stay, with extension online per the official page.
- The official page quotes five working days for processing once the visa fee is paid.
Where it doesnโt
- USD 60,000 is the highest income bar among the region's remote-work visas.
- Agency sources say it must be applied for from outside Indonesia. The official page we read does not say so, so ask before you book travel.
- Agencies report real-world processing of 4 to 8 weeks for complete files, longer than the five working days the official page quotes.
Who cannot use this visa
- You cannot show a work contract with a company established outside Indonesia.
- You plan to sell goods or services in Indonesia beyond what your own work requires. The official page lists this as forbidden.
What we previously got wrong on this page
Figures here are never silently edited. Anything we published and later corrected is shown below with its date.
governmentFee.amountUSD 500 application fee.
No government fee published.
The USD 500 figure is widely repeated for this visa but is not stated anywhere on the source page we hold. An absent figure is better than a plausible one.
governmentFee.amountNo government fee published.
IDR 7,000,000 for a one-year stay, as listed on the official E33G page.
The Directorate General of Immigration page lists the fee lines in rupiah. We re-read it on 3 October 2026.
processingTime4 to 8 weeks.
Five working days after payment, per the official page. Agencies still report 4 to 8 weeks.
The earlier figure came from agency material. The official page states five working days.
summaryA four-year Indonesian tax exemption on foreign income, and a rule that income must be from foreign sources.
Both claims removed from the summary and the rules.
Neither is stated on the official E33G page. They remain agency claims and are not published here as fact.
