F-1-D Workation Visa

South Korea's F-1-D "Workation" visa stopped being a pilot on 30 June 2026 and now allows up to 3 years of residence instead of 2, granted 1 year at a time from the date of entry. The income test is no longer a flat double-GNI bar: the Ministry of Justice applies 1x to 2x of per-capita GNI (about KRW 52.41 million for 2025) depending on your age and where in Korea you live, so 18-34 year olds settling outside the Seoul capital region or in a population-decline area qualify at roughly KRW 52.41 million a year while the top tier is about KRW 104.82 million. Everyone must hold private medical insurance covering at least KRW 100 million for hospital treatment and repatriation to their home country, and working for a Korean employer while on F-1-D is prohibited.

This record has not been fully source-checked yet. The headline figures come from secondary sources and some fields are incomplete. Treat it as a starting point and confirm with the embassy before acting.

Requirements at a glance

Stay per entry1 year from the date of entry
Total validityUp to 3 years of residence in total since 30 June 2026 (previously 1 year plus a single 1-year extension, capped at 2 years)
ExtendableYes - extended in Korea in one-year increments at an immigration office up to the 3-year ceiling, provided you still meet the income, insurance and remote-employment conditions at renewal
EntriesMultiple
Government fee$45 — single-entry consular fee for U.S. citizens at Korean missions in the U.S.; fees differ by nationality under reciprocity, and a change of status filed inside Korea on HiKorea is billed separately in won
Income required₩104,820,000 — per year, after tax, for the top tier (2x Korea's 2025 per-capita GNI of KRW 52.41 million). Since 30 June 2026 the requirement slides between 1x and 2x GNI by age and region: applicants aged 18-34 in a non-capital-region or population-decline area need only 1x, about KRW 52.41 million. The base GNI figure is re-announced by the Bank of Korea each spring, so the won threshold moves every year.
Savings requiredNone
Deposit requiredNone
Minimum age18
Health insuranceRequired — at least ₩100,000,000
Processing timeNot officially published; secondary sources cite 2 to 4 weeks at a consulate, and 3 to 10 business days for a change of status filed on HiKorea
Apply fromA Korean embassy or consulate abroad, or as a change of status inside Korea from B-1, B-2 or C-3 short-term status via HiKorea

The insurance rule, precisely

The stated floor is ₩100,000,000 — minimum coverage for the whole stay in Korea, roughly USD 76,000. Meeting that number is necessary but, on this visa, not sufficient:

  • Policy must cover hospital treatment in Korea AND evacuation/repatriation to the home country (본국후송) - a policy that says only 'medical evacuation' is a documented rejection trigger
  • Certificate of insurance subscription is a listed required document at the visa-application stage, not something you can add after arrival
  • Each family member on a dependent application has to be named on the policy with the full coverage amount in their own right

What most guides get wrong about the Korea digital nomad visa

Each of these is a rule that changed, or a detail that is widely repeated incorrectly. Checked 11 September 2026.

Sources disagreeChanged 30 June 2026

You need about USD 66,000 a year, or 85 million won - that's the number every guide gives.

That figure is two GNI cycles out of date and is not a single number any more. From 30 June 2026 the Ministry of Justice applies a sliding 1x-2x of per-capita GNI depending on age and where you live in Korea. On the 2025 GNI of KRW 52.41 million the top tier is about KRW 104.82 million and the floor - ages 18-34 living outside the capital region or in a population-decline area - is about KRW 52.41 million. Several Korean consulate pages in the United States still publish the old USD 66,000 and 85-million-won wording, so an official page is not proof the number is current.

Commonly wrongChanged 30 June 2026

The workation visa caps you at two years - one year plus one extension - so it's not worth it for a real relocation.

The two-year cap ended on 30 June 2026, when the programme stopped being a pilot and became permanent. The Ministry of Justice now allows residence up to three years, still granted a year at a time. The catch is that the exact renewal mechanics inside that three-year window - how many extensions and of what length - have not been set out in any updated primary government document, so plan the third year as probable rather than guaranteed.

Commonly wrong

Any travel medical policy worth 100 million won will satisfy the insurance requirement.

The wording matters more than the number. The requirement is coverage above KRW 100 million for hospital treatment and evacuation to your home country - 본국후송 in the Korean text. Applications get refused when the certificate mentions medical evacuation but says nothing about return to the home country, and consular practice reads the repatriation clause as covering repatriation of remains. Read your certificate for that exact clause before you file, and if you are bringing a spouse or child, make sure the policy names each person with the full coverage amount.

Commonly wrongChanged 30 June 2026

If you're in the reduced-income band you just need to be young - the location part is a formality.

Both conditions have to hold together. The Ministry of Justice example is a foreigner aged 18-34 doing their workation in a non-capital-region (비수도권) or population-decline area, and only then does 1x GNI apply. Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi are the capital region, so basing yourself in Seoul pushes you up the scale regardless of age. The government published the 1x-2x band without publishing the intermediate breakpoints, so anyone who is young in Seoul, or older outside it, has to ask the consulate or immigration office what their actual number is rather than calculate it.

Commonly wrong

F-1-D is a work visa, so you can pick up Korean clients or a part-time local job on the side.

F-1 is a visiting/residence status, not a work status. Korean consular guidance states that employment activities inside Korea are strictly restricted while on F-1-D; the income that qualifies you must come from an overseas employer or your own foreign-registered company, and you need at least a year of that employment behind you before applying. Separately, staying 183 days or more in a tax year - including a 183-day stretch that straddles two tax years - makes you a Korean tax resident, which most guides skip entirely.

Where it wins

  • Three years is now possible in one status, which is longer than most Asian remote-work visas allow
  • Spouse and unmarried children under 18 can accompany you as dependents
  • Issued multiple-entry, so regional trips out of Korea do not burn the status
  • Applicants aged 18-34 who base themselves outside the Seoul capital region face an income bar roughly half the headline figure
  • You can switch from a tourist or short-term business status without leaving the country

Where it doesn’t

  • The top-tier income bar of about KRW 104.82 million (roughly USD 76,000) is high by regional standards and rises whenever GNI does
  • Any paid work inside Korea is prohibited - your income must come from a foreign employer or your own overseas company
  • The Ministry of Justice has published the 1x-2x GNI band but not the exact breakpoints for the in-between cases, so a 30-year-old in Seoul or a 40-year-old in Jeonju cannot calculate their own threshold with certainty
  • You need at least one year of prior employment with the same overseas company or in the same industry, which rules out people who just went freelance
  • Consular pages are inconsistent and several still publish the old USD 66,000 / KRW 85 million figure
  • Staying 183 days or more in a tax year makes you a Korean tax resident, and that can span two tax years
  • An FBI-style criminal record certificate is required, with the usual apostille and validity-window problems

Who cannot use this visa

  • Employment by a Korean company or any profit-generating activity inside Korea
  • Under 18 (dependants may be younger)
  • Less than one year of employment with the overseas company, or in the same industry
  • Income below the threshold for your age and intended region of residence
  • Insurance policy without home-country repatriation cover
  • Criminal record disclosed on the required police certificate

Recent rule changes

  • That figure is two GNI cycles out of date and is not a single number any more.
  • The two-year cap ended on 30 June 2026, when the programme stopped being a pilot and became permanent.
  • Both conditions have to hold together.
