Does the Japan digital nomad visa require health insurance?

By Asia Visa Guide editors · Last verified

Yes. The Japan digital nomad visa requires health insurance, with minimum cover of ¥10,000,000, and the policy has to meet specific conditions.

Private medical or overseas travel insurance covering death, injury and illness, valid for the whole planned stay in Japan

Treatment-cost cover for injury and illness of at least 10,000,000 yen; the ISA's own form asks you to tick either a figure or "Unlimited"

Must also include repatriation of remains or a death benefit, with no minimum amount specified for that element

Cover is mandatory precisely because holders are not "mid-to-long-term residents" and therefore cannot join Japan's public health insurance

Accompanying spouse and children must each satisfy the insurance requirement too

A policy can meet the headline number and still fail at the desk if it does not cover the things the rule names or cannot produce the document the rule asks for. Ask the insurer in writing whether it issues the certificate your route needs before you buy.

What changed

1 July 2026: Japan raised consular visa fees for the first time since 1978. For applications submitted on or after 1 July 2026, a single-entry visa costs 15,000 yen and a multiple-entry visa 30,000 yen, up from 3,000 and 6,000. Almost every digital-nomad guide written before mid-2026 still quotes the old figure.
