How to extend the Thai retirement visa
Extension is a separate process from the original application, judged by a different office against different documents. Most of what goes wrong here is specific to that difference.
The procedure

| Timing | The controlling constraint is the seasoning of the money. Under the retirement criteria the 800,000 THB must already have been in a Thai bank account for at least two months on the filing date, and must remain for three months after permission is granted, after which the balance may fall but never below 400,000 THB. On the combination route (annual income plus deposit totalling 800,000 THB) the post-approval floor is 50 percent of the original deposit rather than a flat 400,000. Immigration Division 1 publishes no fixed earliest-filing window for retirement extensions; the practical limit is that the bank confirmation letter is treated as good for about a week, so the bank visit and the Immigration visit happen the same day or a day apart. For O-A holders the grant is not automatically twelve months: permission runs to the end of the insurance coverage period, up to one year. |

What to bring

- Copy of the passport: photo page, current visa, latest entry stamp, departure card
- Evidence of income such as a retirement pension, interest or dividend
- Fund deposit certificate from a commercial bank located in Thailand or a specialized financial institution established under specific law, plus a copy of the bank passbook
- O-A holders only: insurance evidence on the form approved by the Office of Insurance Commission where the policy is Thai (check the insurer at longstay.tgia.org)
- O-A holders only, foreign insurer or non-Thai social welfare: a certification letter from that country's embassy in Thailand, or a notarised signature certification legalised by the applicant's own Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the form prescribed by the Thai Ministry of Public Health
- O-A holders only, where an insurer refused cover: the insurer's denial letter (Thai insurer) or an MFA-certified notarised equivalent (foreign insurer), plus evidence of the criterion 6.3 fallback — a Thai bank deposit of 3,000,000 THB seasoned two months, or a smaller Thai bank deposit combined with other health insurance totalling 3,000,000 THB
- Documents or other evidence as specified by the Committee for Monitoring the Performance of Immigration Officials
- In practice at most offices: TM.30 residence notification receipt, a map or photos of the residence, and copies signed on every page
- The Immigration Division 1 download index also carries 2025-dated acknowledgement forms STM.2 (criteria and conditions), STM.9 (overstay penalties) and STM.11 (consent to fact-checking), which several other extension categories list explicitly. The retirement document list does not mention them; ask your office whether it wants them.
What goes wrong at extension time
- The permission granted tracks the insurance, not the calendar. An O-A retiree gets a stay matching the policy's coverage period, capped at one year, so a policy already part-used yields a short stamp and an earlier repeat of the 1,900 THB fee.
- Insurance accepted at the embassy can fail at Immigration. Immigration wants the OIC-approved certificate form for a Thai policy, or for a foreign policy a certificate on the Ministry of Public Health form certified by that country's embassy in Bangkok or by a notary whose signature the applicant's own foreign ministry has legalised. A policy schedule, broker letter or insurer PDF is not that document.
- If no insurer will cover you, the fallback is larger than it looks and is not cash-only. Criterion 6.3 allows either a 3,000,000 THB Thai bank deposit seasoned two months, or a Thai bank deposit combined with other health insurance totalling 3,000,000 THB — and the rules state that income or deposits counted under criteria 3, 4 or 5 must not be included, so the 800,000 THB retirement money cannot do double duty.
- The money must be in Thailand. The initial O-A can be granted on a home-country bank statement; the extension requires a deposit in a commercial bank located in Thailand or a Thai specialized financial institution. Retirees who never opened a Thai account fail at this step.
- The three-month post-approval hold is the rule most often miscounted. 800,000 THB must remain for three months after permission is granted; only then may the balance fall, to no less than 400,000 THB, or 50 percent of the original deposit on the combination route.
- Bank letter and passbook must agree. The confirmation letter is treated as good for roughly a week, and any movement on the account between issuing the letter and reaching the counter creates a mismatch.
- Where the transfer code does not identify a deposit as an inbound international transfer, offices ask for a credit advice from the bank.
- TM.30 residence notification by the house owner or landlord is a precondition at most offices, and a missing one stops the file at the document check.
- Office-to-office variance in bank evidence: Chiang Mai is reported to want a full 12 months of statements, Jomtien to audit the two-month seasoning day by day. Ask your own office for its list before queuing.
- Retirement is outside the 12 grounds served by the e-Extension service, so there is no online channel and no expedited path for it.
- Departing Thailand without a re-entry permit cancels the extension.
