How to extend the DTV
Extension is a separate process from the original application, judged by a different office against different documents. Most of what goes wrong here is specific to that difference.
The procedure
| Where to file | Inside Thailand at the Immigration Bureau, not at an embassy. The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Ho Chi Minh City directs DTV holders to the Office of the Immigration Bureau at Government Center B, Chaengwattana Soi 7, Laksi, Bangkok 10210 (tel. 0-2141-9889). The Immigration Division 1 (Bangkok) visa-extension page publishes DTV as its own numbered category, item 39. The online e-Extension service at Thaiextension.vfsevisa.com does not cover the DTV: the Immigration Bureau lists twelve qualifying reasons for that platform (tourism, public school teachers, attending a public school, serving in a government agency, former Thai, resident's families, press, trainer or researcher for a government agency, machine installation and repair, medical specialist, stationed vehicle operator, embassy-certified and requested) and DTV is not among them, so expect to attend in person. Kuala Lumpur's instruction is simply to contact the Immigration Bureau directly on arrival in Thailand. |

| Timing | File before your current permission to stay expires — the extension continues an existing 180-day stay rather than starting a new one, and overstaying voids the option. The financial evidence has its own clock that differs from the embassy stage: the published criterion is that the bank account or accounts be verifiable 'not less than 30 days prior to the application date', so the money must be in place a month before you file, not on the day. Immigration does not publish a per-office processing time for DTV extensions; the extension is granted for 180 days. |

Ho Chi Minh City states that the holder may be granted an extension for a period of 180 days, and that after that extended period (180 days + 180 days) the holder must depart Thailand, and can then re-enter on the same DTV within the visa's validity. What to bring

- One photograph, 4x6 cm or 2-inch size
- Proof of finances totalling at least 500,000 baht: either (a) financial evidence from a Thai bank account and/or a verifiable foreign bank account, combined, covering not less than 30 days prior to the application date, or (b) proof of financial support for travel — a certificate from the company or employer, or a guarantee letter for at least 500,000 baht valid on the application date, with documents showing the relationship between guarantor and applicant
- Telework route: employment verification — a contract for work abroad still in effect on the application date, or employment history or previous work
- Activities route: certificate of activity — for soft power, certificates and requests for extension of stay from the relevant government authorities; for medical care, a medical certificate from a hospital or government medical institute; for government-supported training and seminars, a government invitation letter and acceptance letter; for government-supported art and music exhibitions, a certificate from the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) plus activity participation photographs
- Dependants (spouse and legitimate children under 20): relationship documents such as birth, marriage and adoption certificates
- Evidence of residence in the Kingdom — rent and payment evidence for a hotel, condominium or house, or an owner-certified copy of the title deed
- Copy of previous notification of staying over 90 days (TM.47) and Notification of residence of foreigner (TM.30)
What goes wrong at extension time
- The required-document list asks for a copy of your previous 90-day notification (TM.47) and the Notification of residence of foreigner (TM.30) filed by your landlord or hotel. Neither is checked at the border or at the embassy, so a DTV holder who rented privately, whose landlord never filed a TM.30, and who skipped 90-day reporting reaches the extension window with a gap that cannot be closed on the spot. Confirm your landlord has filed the TM.30 in the week you move in, and file the TM.47 on schedule.
- The soft-power standard changes between the embassy and Immigration. The embassy accepts proof of confirmation to attend a Muay Thai course or cooking class from a private provider; the published extension criterion asks for certificates and requests for extension of stay from the relevant government authorities. A private gym's acceptance letter is not that instrument, and how far an office bends on it is officer-dependent.
- The money clock differs between the two stages. The published extension criterion is that funds be verifiable not less than 30 days prior to the application date, which is narrower than the seasoning applicants report embassies applying. Meeting one does not mean meeting the other.
- The extension re-opens the original case. DTV holders report being asked at the 180-day extension to produce the whole file again — the activity acceptance letter, the 500,000 baht statements, evidence the activity is still running. Bring the complete original application, not only the new documents.
- Outcome varies by office and officer, and because DTV is absent from the online e-Extension platform you cannot route around that variance by filing digitally. Ho Chi Minh City points DTV holders at the Chaengwattana office in Bangkok; provincial offices may handle it differently.
- Exiting Thailand and re-entering on the same DTV gives a fresh 180-day stay with no TM.7, no fee and no document review, which is why many DTV holders skip the extension. The trade-off is that a border run restarts the 180-day stay but does nothing about Thai tax residency, which turns on days present in a calendar year regardless of visa status.
- The 1,900 baht figure comes from the Bangkok Immigration extension page, where it is printed inside other TM.7 extension categories and tied in the page's Thai text to the TM.7 form itself; the DTV section (item 39) names TM.7 as the form but does not restate a fee. Bring cash.
